Electrical fault finding in Pretoria East

When the power keeps tripping and you cannot see why, guessing gets expensive. We test circuit by circuit until we find the real cause.

Most of the fault-finding calls we get start the same way. The earth leakage trips, it resets fine, and then a day later it trips again. Sometimes it only happens when it rains, or when the kettle and the geyser are on at the same time. It is frustrating, and swapping out parts until it stops is not a fix.

We work through the installation methodically. We test each circuit, check the insulation on the wiring, look at what is plugged in and what is hard wired, and narrow it down until we can show you exactly where the fault is. Then you decide on the repair knowing what you are paying for.

What people call us about

Jobs we get called for

  • Earth leakage tripping

Often moisture in an outdoor plug, a tired geyser element or a damaged cable. We find which one.

  • A breaker that trips under load

We check whether the circuit is overloaded, the breaker is weak or there is a fault on the line.

  • Plugs or lights that stopped working

A loose connection somewhere along the circuit, traced and repaired.

  • Tripping only when it rains

Water getting into outdoor lights, garden plugs or a cable joint. Found and sealed or replaced.

How we find the fault

  1. 1

We start by asking questions. When does it trip, what was on at the time, has anything been added or changed recently? Your answers save a lot of testing.

  2. 2

We split the installation up at the DB board and test each circuit on its own, so we know which part of the house the fault lives in.

  3. 3

On that circuit we test the wiring and each point along it until we find the plug, light, appliance or cable that is causing the trouble.

  4. 4

We explain what we found and what it will take to fix, then repair it and test again before we leave.

FAQ

Common questions

Why does my earth leakage trip when it rains?

Water is getting in somewhere it should not, usually into an outdoor plug, garden light, pool pump connection or an underground cable joint. We test those circuits first when the pattern points to the weather.

Could it be an appliance and not the wiring?

Yes, quite often. A kettle, geyser element or old fridge can leak to earth and trip the whole board. Part of fault finding is ruling appliances in or out before we start opening walls.

Can I just replace the earth leakage unit?

Sometimes the unit itself is faulty, but more often it is doing its job and tripping for a reason. We test it as part of the check so you only replace it if it is actually the problem.
